Scheme Overview

The aim of this project is to improve a public transport route out of Cardiff City Centre and to improve active travel links in and out of the City.

The project involved the introduction of a bus lane (outbound) on Penhill Road, improvement to routes for active travel by introducing shared footways for cyclists and pedestrians, constructing a small section of ‘no dig’ shared path in Llandaff fields which links to an improved Toucan crossing.

Other elements of the scheme are made up of improving an existing signalised crossing point to a Toucan Crossing, re-aligning of kerblines, parking and signage improvements.

How the project was delivered

Volos undertook the role of NEC4 ECC Project Manager along with the quantity surveyor role on this project.

To ensure cohesive delivery of the project, Volos took a proactive approach to project and commercial management by placing communication at the heart of the project ensuring an open, honest, and fair atmosphere was set so both the Contractor and the Delivery team could work together in achieving the scheme objective and set achievable milestones.

Duties undertaken as part of the role were:

  • Proactive administration of the contract in accordance with ECC NEC option A

    • Drainage department
    • Asset management
  • External stakeholder management and liaison including;
    • Cardiff bus
    • Affected residents
    • Affected commercial properties
  • Commercial management including:
    • Cost reporting
    • Valuations
    • Change management
  • Chairing design, progress, early warning, and commercial meetings
